Former Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell won the Florida Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, ensuring a November clash against Republican Sen. Rick Scott.
Scott has won statewide election three times. He won each subsequent election by an increasingly narrow margin. He won an open race for governor in 2010 by 1.2 percentage points, and he won re-election four years later by 1.1 percentage points. In 2018, he beat incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson by 0.2 percentage points.
Mucarsel-Powell ousted a Republican incumbent in a congressional seat based primarily in Miami-Dade in 2018. Two years later, she lost to then-Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez.
The two will face each other in the Nov. 5 general election.
This year is Scott’s first time up for re-election as Florida’s junior senator. Unlike in past races, Florida is increasingly viewed as too Republican to categorize as a swing state.
Polls have consistently shown Scott in the lead against Mucarsel-Powell.
Two recent polls โ one by the University of North Florida Public Opinion Research Lab last month and another this month by the Florida Atlantic University PolCom Lab โ had Scott up by four percentage points over Mucarsel-Powell.
The winner will serve a six-year term.
