Brevard County voters on Tuesday night elected Kyle Savage to represent them in District 2, which stretches from Cape Canaveral to Cocoa, Cocoa Beach and Merritt Island.
On Tuesday, Savage received 54.9% of the votes to defeat incumbent Trent, who received 45.1% of votes, according to the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections.
Neither Trent, who served on the school board, or challenger Kyle Savage exceeded 50% of votes in August, leading to Tuesday nightโs runoff.
Savage, 40, is a former teacher at Cape View Elementary and IT specialist. He challenged Trent, 57, a teacher and real estate agent who has served on the board since November 2022.
Savage previously served as a military police officer in the Army. The central issues of his campaign wereare declining enrollment, teacher retention, and financial transparency.
Savage ran on the promise to fight for increased teacher pay, strengthening the district, fighting declining enrollment and ensure fiscal transparency on how school dollars are spent. Throughout his campaign, he has been vocal about expanding Voluntary Prekindergarten programs to all elementary schools in District 2 in efforts to improve declining enrollment in Brevard public schools. Savage also raised concerns about potential school closures and has called for teachers and parents to lend a hand in the decisions.
Trentโs campaign website focuseds on maintaining the districtโs academic performance, expanding STEM programs and career and technical education (CTE). In addition to school safety, preparing students for college/careers and parental involvement.
In August, Trent received 41.9% of the vote and Savage received 31.4%, forcing a runoff between the two candidates. Kelly Wentworth, the third candidate in the August election, received 26.8% and did not advance to the runoff.
According to the Florida Division of Elections, Brevard County has 446,368 registered voters as of Sept. 30, 2026. Countywide turnout was 272,166, or 60.9%. However, only 24,274 participated in the election representing 5.4% of registered voters.
Some of Trentโs endorsements include U.S. Congressman Mike Haridopolos and Florida State Senator Debbie Mayfiled. The Communication Workers of America stood behind Savage for the election, as well as the Florida Education Association.
Although Savage received fewerless votes than Trent in August, he increased his August vote total by roughly 74% this time around. Almost double the amount of registered voters participated in the runoff race, totaling 48,100 voters.
